Why is it necessary to use mod-rewrite...? just curious, because I used to use another software before which was in the same format as WSN, i.e. ....directory/index.php?action=display&catid=1 (etc) and that was spidered by Google no problems.

It isn't necessary, which is why it's not said anywhere that it's necessary. Some of my own installs don't use it.

Category name rewriting, however, puts keywords into your URLs. Keywords that are in a URL tend to be weighted higher by search engines than keywords in regular page text.

As well, some people just like the look in the address bar and it likely increases the chance of someone linking to a special category if it has a more important looking url.
