I'm not sure why this is happening, but when I create a category that has sub-cats, and I delete the main category itself, all of the sub-cats roll up to the main page and become top-level categories rather than also being deleted from the directory as well. As a result, I have to manually delete each new top-level category that used to be sub-cats because they don't show up on the page that allows mass deletions of main categories.
