Google started to index my new WSN links site at www.drivertrainingtoday.co....rivinginstructordirectory/ but has it appears penalised my pages, putting them into the Supplimental results index because of duplicate content...
Google is finding a copy of the home page at the following URL as well as the main URL. Why and where is it finding this URL and how do I get rid of it...
I haven't seen google penalize a site simply for duplication, it just hides the duplicates. Anyhow a sitemap should let it know which url is more important.
Have you read the recent official statement from google about duplicate content and the supplimental results index? And the blog post by Matt Cutts (Google Employee)? I'll get you the links.
It seems google is really building its supplimental index at the moment and if Googles statement is correct, even a lengthy copyright notice at the bottom of the page, duplicated on many pages of your site, can effect you. It says not to use a copyright notice on each page, but instead to link to a page that contains your copyright notice if you are to avoid the duplicate filter.
Sounds silly? It is silly and i have just had thousands of pages accross many sites dumped into the supplimental results index.
As far as I can see supplimental results are not a punishment, it just means that your site (or rather the most clearly related parts of the site) only shows up once in each search (unless people ask to see the rest), which is perfectly fair and makes the searching experience better. If google is improving how it recognizes that pages are part of the same groups then good for google, that's why I use google to search. If you're fighting to get a bunch of similar pages from your site to flood a search results page and prevent it from intelligently grouping them, aren't you just trying to make the web a worse place for everyone?
Anyhow I have a forum where google has the threads indexed under a bunch of different urls (thanks to changes over the years) and it hasn't affected the traffic they send me.
