Sounds like you removed a link type but then left it in the search template. Don't remove link types unless you're going to go through taking their code out of the templates.
Thanks for the reply which enabled me to track down where the problem was. Sorry for posting this as a bug.
I had not deleted any link type so that was not the problem, but what I had done was to add two extra link types and did not put the correct code in the search templates. When I copied the code from the manual for adding extra linktypes and then altered it to suit the name of my new link type it works.
Thanks again,
Robin

I search on my site (instance 'Search' for 'fences) and when the results show up it has at the end of results the following:-
'PRESTON FENCING' [img>http://www.gardenbuildings.com/directory/template... > Great Britain UK
[View Link Details]
{LINKTITLE} {LINKNEW} {LINKUPDATED} {LINKADMIN}
Description: {LINKDESCRIPTION}
Rating: {LINKSTARS} ({LINKRATING}/5 based on {LINKVOTES} votes)
Hits Out: {LINKHITS} | Hits In: {LINKHITSIN}
