That's entirely dependent on the size of your database. It takes a millisecond on a small database and many hours on a large database, and something in between on midrange sizes. With my largest database I prefer to run the commands directly from SSH so that I can see when it's done. (Which is not to say I run them often, probably haven't in the last 6 months at least, as on said large database is brings down the site for an annoyingly long time and I've never really been able to measure the benefits.)
