I understand that wordpress has a pingback facility whenever the site is updated, which then helps tell google about the update.
Any chance of this with WSNLinks?

No, it's something else and in addition. I'll see if I can dig up the info on it again.

To my knowledge, google doesn't offer any other ways of notifying them about a website except a ping which sends the map. If they do offer a duplicate way to accomplish the same thing, though, there's still no point in the duplication.

There's also google blog search, and it really works fast. I just added a blog to my directory for that reason.
I've seen other sites get new posts listed on google just 10 - 15 minutes after publishing a new article.
The pingback address for google blog search is
http://blogsearch.google.com/ping/RPC2
You can of course ping google when you update your site map at
www.google.com/webmasters/tools/ping?sitemap=http%3A%2F% 2Fwww.yoursite.com%2Fsitemap.gz
This needs to be urlencoded.
