I am curious if I can use WSN links for a project where I would run the script from one domain and produce static pages that are written to other domains on the same server. In theory this should be possible with 'static file generation', but it fails due to permission problems. Any clue how I could change this?

Whatever directory you're writing to, you need to set write permissions (typically 777) for it via FTP or SSH.
