I guess there's a problem (bug) with the mod_rewrite, but I'm not sure therefore I post it here.
I use mod_rewrite and category names in URL. It works perfect, but if I call a subdirectory like http://www.mydomain.com/category/subcategory I get a "File does not exist: /path/to/my/wsnlinks/category, referer: http://and so on... entry in the apache error_log file. So obviously it works but it produces an error entry. Why is this? Can anybody reproduce this?
You're not reading the entry at all. Please take a minute to read it. The point of the entry is that when you have to use a trailing slash that means your site is broken because you don't have a rewrite_base. Apparently you choose to call this broken state "without a problem" and then at the same time observe one of the problems.
I'm sorry Paul, I have to correct myself. The trailing slash was used in a previous test installation. I just removed it, so I do not use and I do not need to use a rewrite base in .htaccess. WNS Links is installed in the root directory and I still get an error entry for every subcategory. Only for subcategories, not for maincategories. Now it has nothing to do with rewrite base or trailing slash.
Again, it doesn't make a difference if I set a rewrite base or not. And I don't need to use a trailing slash. So my site isn't broken, is it?
In every case I get error_log entries for every subcategory. In my opinion there's something wrong with the rewrite rule. Why does it work for maincategories and it doesn't work for subcategories?
Am I really the only one with a full error_log file? I can't believe it!
A site that can't load pages in a particular way is the definition of broken, search engines and random users will access occasionally in the manner in which it doesn't work, which will create an error log.

I already use the trailing slash (it doesn't work without it).
But it has nothing to do with my problem. The site works without a problem, but it generates megabytes of error_log entries. Any idea?

Or do I still misunderstand you?

If you select to run your site in a broken way, I will not support it.

We're not talking about the same thing.
