I am currently receiving the following error when trying to upgrade:
Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 8388608 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 1640860 bytes) in /home/xxx/public_html/includes/filefunctions.php on line 539
This reminds me of the same issue a few years ago, however I don't remember the resolution. Is this a software bug?
That memory limit is really too low for reliable operation. I'll see if I can trim something, but there are various senarios like image resizing which are always going to hit that limit. Since the upgrade has to use a few megs to download the archive, it may not be possible to get it under such a restrictive limit either.

I recommend 12M or 16M.
