I've made some extensive changes in my language file, particularly the emails that are sent out. I noticed in the upgrade directions for the more recent updates that it instructs people to overwrite the language file (actually it says which directories not to overwrite, particularly templates and integration, but doesn't say not to overwrite language).
Is there a changelog for the language file by chance so I can see what has changed language wise from older versions? I have one site that is still running a 3.4 version that I would like to upgrade.
Will newer versions mention changes to language files specifically?
(actually it says which directories not to overwrite, particularly templates and integration, but doesn't say not to overwrite language).
The upgrade instructions have never said to not overwrite /languages/ because there are no files in the provided /languages/, so nothing will ever be overwritten. The zip file I provide only has files in /languages/setup/, which is not used for live language display on your site. Same reason overwriting /attachments/ doesn't delete any of your attached files. Unless there are FTP clients which behave differently from what I'm familiar with.
4.1.0, however, does have complicated instructions for language preservation. When upgrading from version 4.0.13 or later to 4.1.0, it should provide a list of which language items have changed, and automatically update those you haven't customized. It can't do it for earlier versions since it depends on the language files of those versions being available at my file comparison tool, which earlier versions aren't. From version 3.4, you can upgrade to 4.0.39. None of the 3.4->4.0 language changes are essential. Then you can go on to 4.1.

Hi Paul,
I've made some extensive changes in my language file, particularly the emails that are sent out. I noticed in the upgrade directions for the more recent updates that it instructs people to overwrite the language file (actually it says which directories not to overwrite, particularly templates and integration, but doesn't say not to overwrite language).

Will newer versions mention changes to language files specifically?
Thanks Paul!
