Some advice needed please. I will have 50 categories, each with about 20 sub-cats, and then another 10-20 sub-sub cats.... so a lot of categories.
I've noticed that even if you set the category level to just 1 in the Admin, in the Edit Categories section, it will show them all... now I suspect this page will take a while to load, when I'm done with adding my categories.... ?
Also, when you're editing a link and want to place it in a sub-category, if you've set the category level to 1, then it won't show you the sub-cats (or anything deeper).. which means the only way to place a link in a deeper category is to change the category levels to 2 or more....
So what's the best way to deal with this situation?
Actually if you have a lot categoriews the Edit categories will not work at all. I have lots of categories and Edit categories page does not open. i suspect is due to timeout issue. That sucks as i can't access this page at all.
qwqw, that's because you've ignored the warning message printed in caps in readme.txt, as well as the manual entry, which give instructions for sites with large numbers of categories.
capitaine, if you set the level to 1 it will only show the top level. You may need to regenerate the category selector first but I believe it's done automatically when that setting is changed. And to set something to be in a deeper category you need to use the category id number after setting the switch appropriately as refenced in the readme and described in the manual.
Thanks Paul, I did not ignore it. I just do not know how to work it.
My catselector level was set to 2 initially. Now I set it to 1. Sitemap to 3. I have 2 categories and 300 subcategories. In either case I get "can't display" error for "edit categories" page.
Also, if we switch off the cat selector on edit/submission pages than how do people submit the links to the appropriate category or change link's category?
Also how can admin can create alliases or move links between categores/subcategories if we do not have any catselector?
users can submit links to the appropriate category by being in that category in the first place, i.e. clicking on the 'submit link' option from within that category
one thing I can't work out is: where is the sitemap feature? I can see it in the admin, but where's the actual sitemap on the user side?
Let's see. A user submits to a higher level category and as admin you do not like it. How do you move the link to another category without catselector? Just going back and forth remembering all categories and typing each of them by hand? What if you alias the link to several categories?
Catselector is a an essential thing to have but apprantly it works only with very small diretories while it mostly needed in bigger directories.
May be creating a static catselector from the dinamic one would be the answer. That is a HTML code is generated for just drop down menu with all categories listed as we would do it by hand.
As far as I can see, when you edit a link from the webpage, you get a category field with a category number (where you presumably have to enter the number (!?) of the cat you want to move it to, and you get a secondary cat field which has a cat selector with all the categories displayed... This is with category levels at 1 and sitemap at 3... (because I want my users to see the sub-cats displayed on the web page but I don't want the sub-cats in the cat selector (because of the problem with large numbers of categories...))
I don't know why the cat field is an input box, while the secondary cat field is a cat selector drop-down....
qwqw, if your top 3 levels have many hundreds, that is exactly why the article tells you to set it to 1. The category selector doesn't actually affect the 'add' or 'edit' pages at all, only the sitemap is involved there.
The difference is that one of them is on the 'suggest' pages where it gets replaced differently, obeying usergroup permissions to grey things out and the like. The other is just the category selector stuff.

What is the difference between {CATSELECTOR} and {CATOPTIONS}? I see both display all categories and subcategories.
If we switch CATSELECTOR off can we use CATOPTIONS instead with large number of subcategories/subsubcategories?
