OK, I want to share the links from my old directory with the new one I am putting up. I'd like to grab all the links/listings, members and categories (and subcats) only, put them in the new directory.

If I backup the WSN Links database on server123.com and then restore the database on server456.com, this won't overwrite my individual settings for the new server configurations, right?

Also, is there any way to be in on the auto-submit bandwagon? What I mean is like at a site like Announce.com where your URL is added (at one centralized site that offers such a service) from that site to your WSN Links Directory (either for free or at some set automated fee) and the directory returns that the submission has been submitted (pending approval)?

Thanks Again! -Doug

What exactly do you mean? Restoring a database will, naturally, restore the database. It will replace whatever is currently in your server456 database with whatever is in your backup file.

If you're actually trying to move, rather than backup, read the manual: scripts.webmastersite.net/w...nks/wsnmanual/articles/249

your URL is added (at one centralized site that offers such a service) from that site to your WSN Links Directory (either for free or at some set automated fee) and the directory returns that the submission has been submitted (pending approval)?

I guess you're probably looking for scripts.webmastersite.net/w...inks/wsnmanual/articles/20

Cool. Both those articles are very helpful. However, as for remote submission, I was actually thinking of those centralized remote submission tools. Some offer this as a service of a website, some offer this as a software program, to submit your site to literally a long list of search engines and directories.

Announce.com is given as an example of a site offering 25 or so free submissions to search engines from one central point. I see that the site is down, now. Ooops. But it works like any such site. Here's a different example: AddPro.com offers a free submission to 18 engines.

Usually, the procedure is that You type your URL into text field, add your email address so they can spam you (free is never free, but you use a spam address), then click submit.

The tool then reports on the resulting page which engine it is submitting the link to, and whether it is successful, or if there is an error, then starts a new paragraph and does the next one on the list.

So, with the remote submission through another WSN Links directory, this is very possible. But to publicize our directories, we could offer this remote submission protocol to be available to such tools (at the sysops choice, of course).

I am guessing that the format would be propriatary, though. Still I know tools like Traffic Blazer do list some directories that require hand submission by the user, too. But what I am getting at is that I think there would be more exposure to WSN Links Directories as well as the WSN Links engine if this code was publicly available to such tools. Then the webmaster/admin of each WSN Links directory could decide whether or not to offer this service.

Hope I explained it better that time.

Sounds like a spam tool. I've never looked at those "submit your site to 50,000 directories!" things because I don't like the idea. That's what the security image is designed to prevent.

And as for search engines, submitting to them is quite pointless -- if you've got a decent page, they'll spider it on their own, and if you don't you won't come up in any but the most obscure searches anyway.

The code involved, anyhow, is really nothing. All it needs is a form post containing the required fields from the page and the security image being off. It can't be effectively determined where HTTP posts are coming from, the refering URL would be a possible check but I wouldn't trust it, hence why scripts need those security images to prevent automated submissions.

I wouldn't trust these, either. Link farms are usually defined as a place where your link is immediately available upon submission. When the admin still has to approve an addition to a directory (whether remote or local submission), it can't be considered as such.

Thanks for listening, anyway. Though I was not talking about having the site included in those 50,000 search engine submission programs, I can see that it could be used as such. However, almost every major directory or search engine features such remote submission techniques. Submission, of course, does not equate to approval. And the program I was thinking of trying to include this feature into is GoDaddy's "Traffic Blazer", a DIY online SEO guide and submission tool that is targetting the major players. As I resell this from my sites, I thought it would be a give that I should include my own directory services and a great way to promote my own directories, as well as any WSN Links directories.

I know we all need to be careful, paranoid even, about security. Especially when your very product depends on it's reputation and branding so exclusively on the Internet. Just thought it was worth your consideration.

Just as a point, I am dead-set against any sort of SPAM as well.

Thanks
