Hello,

I'm new here and this is my first post.

From what I can tell of WSN Links so far, it's POWERFUL!!!

Maybe too powerful for my needs; like cracking a walnut with a sledge hammer.

I'm trying to use WSN Links as a reciprocal link manager.

So for example, I don't need the full blown membership system. I don't need PM's or IM's. I don't need advance searches that include search by member. I don't need registration that asks for default style, AIM, ICQ, etc. I don't really need members to be able to create private subscription lists. I'm sure there is more.

But obviously I do need a subset of the membership. I can't just disable it in Switches. I need people to be able to submit a Site Name, URL, description, reciprocal link, etc.

Further I love how WSN Link is one of the only affordable scripts that has auto reciprocal link checking to make sure partners continue linking to me; it has payment systems incorporated in it to allow partners to pay for featured placement; it can create RSS feeds by category; and it allow me as the admin to override many things, such as give some a free Featured Listing or not require a reciprocal link.

My question, can someone (perhaps who has used WSN Links as just a reciprocal link manager) give me pointers on which switches to set and which modifications will need to be made?

I know that WSN Links can be a POWERFUL reciprocal manager and that's what I need. A powerful reciprocal link manager, nothing more, nothing less.

And now a features question:
For the sake of argument, let's say I have the domain www.example.com and my directory lives at www.example.com/directory.

I have a network of sites, sports.example.com, travel.example.com, and business.example.com. And for ease of maintenance, I decide as I said to host my network's directory at www.example.com/directory rather than maintain a separate niche directory for each subdomain.

Within the directory I have the categories sports, travel, and business.

I'd like to have a way that when someone submits a link under the sports category, they're required to link back to sports.example.com; a submission under business requires a link back to business.example.com; and so on.

In short, can WSN Links handle different reciprocal links by category?

Thank you in advance.

Hi sjordan. I am a refugee from another program where the owner aborted a major upgrade and has now been AWOL for over a month! As a result I've lost 6 weeks of work.

I am very glad that I found WSN. I agree it is very powerful and well supported. I wish I could be of more help to you but I am learning the ins and outs of the program too having just bought it a number of days ago, however, here is my two cents:

I guess for me it is just trial and error with respect to the switches. Some are more obvious than others. If I am not sure I check the manual or this forum.

One thing I did do is turn mod_rewrite on and hits off so that I URLs would be optimized for search engines (real names vs php gobbletygook). The later will change your broswer URLs to something the search engnes can read and the later will give you outbound links with real URLs that your link partners will appreciate more. With the later you use lose the ability to track IN/OUT hits so there is a trade off.

The other big deal is templates. I have decided not to remove items that I don't need or understand right now in case one day I change my mind. For instance, I don't need members and will allow guests to add reciprocal links but if one day my site takes off then who knows. As I result, I am playing with templates alot and backing up my original templates every day in case I make a blunder. The preview capability of the templates is a great feature. Use it if you havn't already.

If I have any great insights, I will let you know! Good luck.

Hello artwilliams,

I think you and I are in the same boat. Are you a refugee from Kevin's RM program (don't want to mention the script by full name, as he left us high and dry)? Left us with a broken version 4 and a half-baked version 3.3? If you are, I am too.

In fact, it may have been your post at the forum (or one like it) that lead me to WSN Links.

Thanks for the pointers. Like you, at the moment it's trial and error and LOTS of backing up.

If you want to continue to compare notes or help each other build our respect sites, let me know. I'm a very new site, so I won't make any false promises about how much traffic or anything I can send your way, but if you want to just stay in touch and help each other, trade links, or whatever... that works great for me.

All the best.

The recip checker only checks that they link to somewhere on your site (that they have your site url on their page). You could encourage people to link to specific pages using template conditionals. You'd need to turn off the category selector on the suggest link page though if you're doing that in the suggest link template, to prevent them from selecting a category to which the recip link you're giving them wouldn't apply.
