If you have a very large number of categories, see "Issues for exceptionally large sites" in the manual. Otherwise, have you tried regenerating your category selector/sitemap?

I took some of your suggestions and turned off the category selector in the submission pages, regenerated the category selector/sitemap, and changed the member rating formula.

I would like to change the setting on the category selector/sitemap to 2 or 3, but I'm having a hard time finding the place where this is done. Could you point me to the right page?

Thanks!

I found where to edit these values, but I'm not sure what they should be.

What is the optimal number of categories and sitemap level? I currently have 22 categories, 296 subcategories, and 45 links....I would like most, if not all, the main categories to appear on the main page, with about 8 subcats in each also visible on the main page.

Thanks,

Jen

What is the optimal number of categories and sitemap level?

That depends entirely on your directory structure. If you estimate you have about 70-100 categories + subcategories then 2 could be the right level. Then again perhaps you can fit 3, or perhaps you can only fit 1, it's up to how you've organized your site. To show subcategories on the main page though you need 2+ levels.

Of course this also depends on how much you expect people to scroll. A navigation menu with 100 options is rather intimidating to most people.

I would like most, if not all, the main categories to appear on the main page

This doesn't make any sense to me. How could a main category ever not appear on the main page? That's what the main page is for.
