I would like to know if it's possible for me to uninstall the software and delete all files from my server. Download a fresh copy and re-install. But I would like to keep all settings and adverts intact etc?
How can I do this?
I am new to this system, and haven taken over from another web designer. The reason for doing this, is down to a virus on our server.
Just keep the config.php file, upload the files from the .tar.gz and don't run setup. Though this means you'll be deleting the template customizations since they're in /templates/.
Is there any information you can give me on the hack? Where did it put the reference to the tizer.js javascript?
I found the file in the admin folder. We have had our server attacked recently but all the other websites we have, had their .htaccess files hacked. But I found that tizer.js file randomly?!!?
If I keep the config file, delete all the folder and files there is (and keep my template files), and then just re-upload them, will all the settings and images/data still be there?
Another web designer installed and run this system, and I have done nothing with it personally so don't know how it all works!
The settings and data will be there, but images won't be -- if you mean image attachments, those are in the /attachments/ directory.
At least two other sites were attacked with tizer.js between 9 and 10 PM (my time) on the 9th. That hack is easily removed just by running an upgrade or overwriting the files (it must be contained within one of the standard WSN PHP files that gets replaced on upgrade), no apparent need to delete everything. (The tizer.js remains after an upgrade, but is no longer called into the script and therefore harmless, but best to delete anyway.)
I don't know anything about an .htaccess file hack though.
I wish I had seen this before I attempted a reinstall just now - given that my database got wiped. From autosetup, it appeared to me that disabling the top option (I forget now what that is) would preserve the database. Instead I have to start all over. 2 weeks work.
For future people in my situation, PLEASE include an option asking whether database tables are to be wiped or not.
Any recent version of autosetup.php will refuse to wipe your database unless you go out of your way to check a box saying to bypass safety checks. If you choose to bypass safety checks after choosing the same database tables prefix, that's up to you to understand what you're doing.
The only reasonable reason for a reinstall, however, is if you've been hacked and need to make sure the hacker's files are all gone. In any other situation, you're not accomplishing anything since loading the same database makes everything behave the same.
If you can't figure out what's wrong, always feel free to have me look at and fix it for you: http://www.wsnlinks.com/inspection.html . This is a free service.
