The question-mark-in-a-diamond is what shows when the character being displayed isn't compatible with the character set in use. So some sort of non-utf8 character. Maybe you copied it into the link bit from microsoft word or the like? My guess at what you would've used there is the MS Word — character. In HTML you can do that with & m d a s h ; (remove the spaces and you get —).

That thing is appearing on the category display pages between each item of link tool options.

Or is it something to do with my browser?
