hello paul, when i was checking my site i was surprised to see it showed blank.
i allways follow the upgrades so i wasnt sure if that caused it.
So to be sure it wasnt the upgrades i agreed with my host to put back a backup of 7 days ago..
but nothing changed....we couldnt find anything wrong or reported system errors or flaws in any way.
so there wasnt much left to check..

2 positive things.....
the admin area is fully functional and works,it doesnt have any problems...
second....it can show a category...as you can see here..
www.googles.nl/index.php?ac...tion=displaycat&catid=8842

they adviced me to contact you in the hope might have an idea what might be causing this sudden blank index page ?
thanks for any help you can give..

(i have uploaded a index.html page for the index to show a custom ...maintenance page...,its better to show a blank page...)

yes i did...last night....which is actually 9 hours ago sad
but not as it should...
situation is like this...,i always use newest version,i follow the updates...
i never touch anything....
but still...suddenly the index turns blank.
before that i can remember one or maybe two updates...by the system.
but even after that i always look at the front...
all was ok....so i had no reason to think that it might have been caused by the updates.

so what i did was useing the autoinstall and installed newest locally.
then i uploaded that one to a category http://www.googles.nl/1
from that folder i could check it it would run with the database, and it did....
after that i just switched folders...

but i will probably never find out whatever happend..

Known causes of a blank screen: scripts.webmastersite.net/w...ting/blank_screen-211.html . Most of those haven't been seen to do that in many years though. .htaccess issues or CHMOD issues are by far the most likely causes, though they ought to show 500 errors some hosts seem to suppress that in favor of a blank.

Can you clarify this? Do you mean you've seen the same problem before?

hello paul,

no....
what i mean was....
i remember the last 2 updates.....
and after that the site was still ok....

the backup that was put back was 7 days old.

the htaccess is almost empty as i dont use the rewrite...

i never had this before....

i do know it wasnt the database, cause when i uploaded a fresh folder and connected it to the database the site worked.
so that proved it that it wasnt a database problem but somehow by the files/folders..

the htaccess i used at that moment was..

Options +FollowSymlinks
RewriteEngine on
RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -d
RewriteRule ^(.+[^/])$ $1/ [R]
RewriteRule ^admin/?$ admin/index.php

and thats in there for a long time..

Well, if you're not using URL rewriting, you shouldn't have an .htaccess file. Nothing apparently wrong with that one, but delete it anyway, it's not doing anything.

With rewriting off, that leaves a chmod issue. The script isn't supposed to chmod any directories when in CGI mode as you are, but if it did somehow change the base directory to 777 that could make everything go invisible (the solution would be to chmod back to 755).

I'm cleaning out a couple spots that look like they might conceivably chmod in cgi mode in certain situations, though I don't see anything that would be setting the base directory to 777. (My server runs in cgi mode also, have yet to see a chmod problem on my ~30 installs.)

Do you have debug mode set to suppress all errors, and were viewing as a guest? In that case it might be anything with the debug output hidden.

I got a report from someone else that having the cache system on leads to a chmod breaking their site. Are you using the cache system?
