I have a domain that I want to build out as a business directory. It needs to use subdomains for categories as in:
www.mysite.com (main site index page) doctors.mysite.com (main category index page) doctors.mysite.com/pediatrics (subcategory index page) doctors.mysite.com/pediactrics/ent (sub-subcategory index page) doctors.mysite.com/pediatrics/ent/bills-ear-nose-throat-clinic-22.html (link detail page)
and so on for other categories and link detail pages.
I definately want the browser to reflect the subdomains when the user browses around, so redirects from
doctors.mysite.com to www.mysite.com/doctors
are not what I'm looking for.
I know about the SEO implications to doing this, and that's one of the main reasons I do want to do this.
This would obviously have to carry throughout the site, in search results, etc.
Has anyone done this?
Does anyone know if it's even possible to do this?
I don't mind paying for customizations, to make this work this way.
Just about to purchase Links Directory, and came across this post, just what I wanted, is this available to purchase for other people? we have a dedicated server so should be able to get Rackspace to set this up.
I'm ready to go now! I'll gladly do a "partnership" on this, Tony.
I'm looking for someone to do a theme and integrate it once the subdomains are working. I'm not having much luck finding any one.. people seem to want to only work on simple projects like phpLD templates.
I've been digging around, modifying templates - it doesn't seem that difficult, though I'm crap at graphic design..
I did put together some very simple wireframes. There will obviously be more "bells and whistles" in the layout when all is said and done.
Well, do we agree on the functionality as written in the first post? I want the browser to stay on whatever subdirectory it lands on, until the user chooses a different category or goes to the main home page.
Subcategories will not be "subdomained". Only the top level categories will.
Of course, this has to extend to search results, etc.. I want to be able to deep link to specific link detail pages from the home page using search results, eg, doctors.mysite.com/pediatri...nose-throat-clinic-22.html, and other matching search results. Of course, I'll search from the doctors. subdomain and move the search link to the www. index page
I had not considered these points, but your thinking seems sound, I would go along with this, I would also need the installation to be upgradable to the new version with not too much hassle!

I'll trust Paul to make it as smooth as possible
Paul - how do you want to handle payment, etc?
Also, I'm assuming you'll start with the default template set and modify those?
Working on it now. This will go into the next 5.0 alpha as an option at Admin -> Settings -> SEO, so no upgrade issues. Payment is preferably via paypal (other options available if requested) once it's done.

I don't follow. I thought we were talking about URL rewriting with categories as subdomains, not about templates.
I have just purchased a license, I assume I'll get this when you have completed the work (and pay for that as well I would prefer to pay by Google checkout if possible please.
Incidentally, setting up Wildcard DNS on a Plesk server was a little more difficult

Tony

Hello all,
Newbie to WSN prodcuts.
I have a domain that I want to build out as a business directory. It needs to use subdomains for categories as in:
www.mysite.com (main site index page)
doctors.mysite.com (main category index page)
doctors.mysite.com/pediatrics (subcategory index page)
doctors.mysite.com/pediactrics/ent (sub-subcategory index page)
doctors.mysite.com/pediatrics/ent/bills-ear-nose-throat-clinic-22.html (link detail page)
and so on for other categories and link detail pages.
Thanks in advance!

If you're not on a dedicated server, you'll probably have to ask your host to set up wildcard DNS for you.
Then there's integrating the option into WSN and detecting the subdomain. My estimate is 3-6 hours ($150-$300).

I can easily do the server work required at that URL.
Thanks for the reply! I'll start work on this site later this week.

Wildcards are working fine.
How soon can you start? ;p
I'll work up a proposal and send it along later this week.

Haven't heard from fusionx about getting started on it yet. The two of you can split the costs if you like (estimate in post #2).

Never mind then
