My live site is running 4.0.39 while I'm working on getting my templates finalized in 4.1.7. I installed a second 4.039 version, restored the database, and then upgraded.
In any case, the number of links showing at the top of the page has increased by 99 on the 4.1.7 site compared to the 4.0.39. I haven't added any links to either site and I've regenerated both sites. Any idea what could be causing this difference? I don't have 1 single category with that number of links and the only different category type I use has a total of 120 links which should not be included in that number anyway.
Yes, some links are aliased, actually all the links in the one different category type are aliased and there are 120 links in that one alone. There are other regualar links that are aliases, but I'm not sure how many.
Do you think maybe the the newer version is handling the alias differently?
Tested. 4.0.x improperly adds to the total when aliasing, only fixes on regeneration. 4.1.x does the same thing, so they're both wrong until regeneration. Will fix.
How the totals can differ after regeneration I don't see though.
My differences actually are between 4.0.x and 4.1.x. No problems between any of the 4.0.x versions. The difference only appeared after the 4.1.x upgrade.

Yes. Both include aliases (on regeneration at least). 4.0 excludees links set as hidden, but includes links in categories that are set as hidden. 4.1 exludes both hidden and in hidden.
Sorry to re-open a thread, but is there any way to NOT include aliased links in the totals? I'd like to know how many actual links I have, if possible, and including aliased links skews my numbers.

Are you saying the total in 4.1 includes aliases, but excludes hidden categories? Just want to make sure I understand how it gets that number.

{UNIQUETOTAL} doesn't include aliases.
