I would like to know if there is a way to upload a large number of images to a link in one shot, without creating a new field for each attachment? Any way to automate the attachment field creations, so that all I have to do is Browse for the files, select them, then Attach, and WSN uploads each image as an attachment for that link?

No, it's not possible at the moment (except with the extra fields). I may revisit the idea in 4.2.
