Just upgraded a site from b8 to b9 and it tells me which templates to change (great, thanks!). Trouble is I don't have a copy of the actual changes to make as you haven't put up that version in the members area yet.
After upgrading, below the list of customised templates to change there is a link "Show step-by-step instructions of what to change" but it goes to a non-existent page on my site - {COMPARISONURL}
Change log is not updated, so it's probably not worth having the link to it.
It is in the members area, regardless of what it may say, since it's automatically uploaded. Haven't got the listed number to change automatically yet.
Has a mock up of the new template design for the 4.1 series been made available to you yet Paul? I'm just curious as to what your designer has come up with before I make some major modifications to my own templates.
Most of the beta 9 changes were to fix 'check all' options.
On upgrading to b9 it tells me that...
The following templates which you've customized have changes which you will want to apply in order to see new features and the like: banned.tpl, bulkedit.tpl, deletedposts.tpl, deletedtopics.tpl, detailcomments.tpl, details.tpl, edit.tpl, editcat.tpl, editcomments.tpl, editmembers.tpl, ignored.tpl, javascriptheader.js, leaders.tpl, main.tpl, modcp.tpl, modcpsubwrapper.tpl, pmedit.tpl, pmsend.tpl, postbit.tpl, postreply.tpl, redirect.tpl, suggestcat.tpl, suggestfeed.tpl, suggestlink.tpl, viewprofile.tpl, viewreports.tpl, admin/appear.tpl, admin/menu.tpl, admin/slinks.tpl, admin/style.css, admin/switches.tpl, admin/templates.tpl, admin/updatecounters.tpl, admin/validation.tpl, admin/xmlimport.tpl
In fact I haven't customised the majority of those, but presumably, if it's only those with a "check all" on it I can safely ignore this list?

The designer vanished. The first time (in June) he reappeared after a couple weeks and said he'd get started soon, but then he vanished permanently. The final version will look like beta 9 looks.
I may revisit the idea of hiring somebody in a few months, but then again I don't have much cash to risk. The ideal situation would be to come up with incentives which would entice people to sell template sets in the resources section which I'm linking into the admin panel in beta 10. If nothing else I'll make a bunch of a stylesheets with the color wizard.

Maybe there's yet another english/multilingual confusion matter. Is your language file 90+KB again? If so it'd be comparing with the multilingual template set. Though that should cause everything to be marked as changed.
Maybe there was a previous alpha/beta which wasn't overwriting the unchanged, leading them to be considered changed as they became outdated.

I am willing to offer templates once 4.1 is out of beta stage. I am just working on a number of sites using 4.1 all different designs and all will eventually be just css based (no tables, or at least the absolute minimum). I shall list these in the forum soon.

ok - the language file is 104.19kb so I guess that is the problem. I have only ever selected English. Sorry to be a pain but please remind me how to change it. I never use multi-language.

Perhaps we WSN users could make a "wish list" of template features and changes and then collectively post a design contest where the winner would have their template(s) featured in all versions of 4.1 complete with contact information, a link to their website and other free promotional consideration. There seem to be tons of design contests on several of the business and design forums that I visit. Then if the winner wanted to design additional templates for a fee, they could be offered from within the resources section as you mentioned.
I think that the more template options that are offered, the more overall WSN sales you would see because modifying it for specific uses would look less daunting. If this arrangement worked, you would not have to pay anyone directly per se, yet you also wouldn't make anything off the templates but *could* make more just from increased WSN sales.
Having coordinating templates for all of the other scripts (forum etc) would possibly entice people to collect all of the scripts as well.
Just a thought....I know that if I had the design skills, I'd jump all over this because WSN Links is a great script...it just needs some flexibility on the front end that a bunch of cool templates could provide. And if I could get some free publicity, the ability to sell additional templates and maybe pick up some custom design work all the better.

If you don't want to lose customizations by overwriting with englishonly.lng, Admin -> Customizations -> Language -> "[Clean out all unused items in English]" should fix it.
A number of my installs keep doing that as well. Maybe I should give up on the automatic detection. One more try...

Yeah, I've read a number of Digital Point threads where people say WSN is good, but they prefer PHPLD because of the selection of templates available. Just the number of "New PHPLD template here!" threads on forums like that gives a lot of advertising and endorsement to PHPLD. Of course it's a catch-22, it's easy for PHPLD to get people making templates because there are so many users to market them to. Several people have told me the reason they don't make WSN templates is they're not convinced there's enough of a market.
In the past the pace of development was a bit quick for template designers to keep up with, but with 4.0 having lasted more than 10 months I don't think that's a factor anymore.
If this arrangement worked, you would not have to pay anyone directly per se, yet you also wouldn't make anything off the templates but *could* make more just from increased WSN sales.
Haven't had any luck with past design contests, but it's probably worth another try. I'm hesitant to put advertising in the admin panel. I suppose it could be done tastefully. Though most templates out there put a linkback on the world-visible side, which I don't want to require users to do.
First priority is 4.1 though, hopefully a release candidate will be ready within a week. I don't want more delays so a change to the default template would be more practical for 4.2, though it could be available as an additional option in later 4.1 releases.
Not to keep dragging this thread off topic, but what kind of templates do people want? Have you ever gotten any specific requests or examples? Maybe something super clean like DMOZ?

The file comparison tool is still at http://www.wsnforum.com/filecomparison/ . Beta 8 -> 9 english comparison: www.wsnforum.com/filecompar...=%2Ftemplates%2Fdefault%2F
Most of the beta 9 changes were to fix 'check all' options.
Will fix the link shortly. Edit: what it should do is link each filename to the file comparison tool's instructions for that file. Working on it.

I recall one person asking for something clean and simple, though I can't find what link he gave as an example.
In general people probably want the same as they want for PHPLD templates: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/forumdisplay.php?f=81
