1) I am having some problems with my job site search function. I want to be able to search "ca" (california) and have the results only show jobs with ca and not "North Canton, OH" or any word that starts with ca____ like CAnton.
I tried using search "ca" with the condition "exactly" and it only returned one result even though i know there are lots of jobs with ca in the title. Sometimes the "exactly" condition returns no results even though i know the word exist in the title.

2) If I do a search with Canadaigua, NY with the condition "contain" a result with show up with the right job but if I remove the comma from Canadaigua NY and redid the search then no results will be shown. Is there a way to show the Canadaigua, NY ad even though I didnt type the comma ? I would like it to show the same amount of results with or with out comma. I didnt use the "has any word" condition because it returned too many irrelevant results.

Don't require space around search terms to get match: Applies to 'and' and 'or' searches. Setting this to yes will yield more search results, but for short search terms (like "it") that might be contained in the middle of many other words it will produce unwanted results. Generally, turn this on for small sites and off for large sites.
Actually setting it to 'yes' or 'no' has no effect for my search results, i dont know if im doing something wrong or that it may not be working properly.
Exactly means exactly, but do you mean exactly? Your records all have the value "ca", no other letters before or after? From what you say, I gather you don't have that -- instead you have values like "Sacramento, CA". The only way to find that sort of data would be to search for records containing ", CA".
The spaces being required means only "CA blah" or "blah ca blah" or "blah ca" would match, when not required then "blahcablah" matches -- for exact match searches, that is.
Ill try to be more specific with my question sorry about the confusion:
If i do a search with any condition for "ca" all the jobs for "ca" will be listed as well as this one "Canadaigua, NY" and "Canton, OH" I figure that Canadaigua, NY and Canton, OH were both listed because both cities start out with the letter ca. I was wondering if there is a way to not have search results show searches like the ones i mentioned above since they are irrelevant to the search.
My concern is that if my website gets more job posts then in the long run there may be too many irrelevant search results due to the above problem.
Again, if you're searching some field named say "location" which contains "Canadaigua, NY" then you need to do as I said in post #2. If that's not what your field contains then of course you'll need to tell me what your field actually does contain before I can make any useful comment.
hi paul, I ll rephrase my question. Is it possible to set up search so if someone searches for "zz" only those results with "zz" show up and not any word that begins with zz like "zztop". This occurs with both of my wsnlink sites when I do a search so I think it's part of the script. It seems to happen with both the simple and advance searches no matter the field.
I just did an advance search for 'world' in links under title contains from wsnlinks demo on your website and it returned 38 matching links for "world". When you look at the results you will see what i mean. Anything with the word "world" will be included in the results even though i only want to see just "world" by itself. Like breaksworld, webmasterworld and etc.
I am justing looking for a way to set up my search results so it is more specific to the search. With all the wonderful options your script offers I'm not sure if I'm just missing some easy admin search setup.

I've spent a lot of time customizing your script for my sites, which I love by the way, but some issues can really set me back a lot and not make it worth while for me at all. 1) I am having some problems with my job site search function. I want to be able to search "ca" (california) and have the results only show jobs with ca and not "North Canton, OH" or any word that starts with ca____ like CAnton.

2) If I do a search with Canadaigua, NY with the condition "contain" a result with show up with the right job but if I remove the comma from Canadaigua NY and redid the search then no results will be shown. Is there a way to show the Canadaigua, NY ad even though I didnt type the comma ? I would like it to show the same amount of results with or with out comma. I didnt use the "has any word" condition because it returned too many irrelevant results.

I do have the below option in admin set to 'no'
Don't require space around search terms to get match:
Applies to 'and' and 'or' searches. Setting this to yes will yield more search results, but for short search terms (like "it") that might be contained in the middle of many other words it will produce unwanted results. Generally, turn this on for small sites and off for large sites.
Actually setting it to 'yes' or 'no' has no effect for my search results, i dont know if im doing something wrong or that it may not be working properly.

Exactly means exactly, but do you mean exactly? Your records all have the value "ca", no other letters before or after? From what you say, I gather you don't have that -- instead you have values like "Sacramento, CA". The only way to find that sort of data would be to search for records containing ", CA".
The spaces being required means only "CA blah" or "blah ca blah" or "blah ca" would match, when not required then "blahcablah" matches -- for exact match searches, that is.

Ill try to be more specific with my question sorry about the confusion:
If i do a search with any condition for "ca" all the jobs for "ca" will be listed as well as this one "Canadaigua, NY" and "Canton, OH" I figure that Canadaigua, NY and Canton, OH were both listed because both cities start out with the letter ca. I was wondering if there is a way to not have search results show searches like the ones i mentioned above since they are irrelevant to the search.
My concern is that if my website gets more job posts then in the long run there may be too many irrelevant search results due to the above problem.

Again, if you're searching some field named say "location" which contains "Canadaigua, NY" then you need to do as I said in post #2. If that's not what your field contains then of course you'll need to tell me what your field actually does contain before I can make any useful comment.

I ll rephrase my question. Is it possible to set up search so if someone searches for "zz" only those results with "zz" show up and not any word that begins with zz like "zztop". This occurs with both of my wsnlink sites when I do a search so I think it's part of the script. It seems to happen with both the simple and advance searches no matter the field.
I just did an advance search for 'world' in links under title contains from wsnlinks demo on your website and it returned 38 matching links for "world". When you look at the results you will see what i mean. Anything with the word "world" will be included in the results even though i only want to see just "world" by itself. Like breaksworld, webmasterworld and etc.
I am justing looking for a way to set up my search results so it is more specific to the search. With all the wonderful options your script offers I'm not sure if I'm just missing some easy admin search setup.

The "don't require spaces" setting, when set to "no", just requires a space on either side -- not on both. Will change it to require it on both.

I've spent a lot of time customizing your script for my sites, which I love by the way, but some issues can really set me back a lot and not make it worth while for me at all.
