Hi all -
I am wondering if the script allows a way to have links be "claimed" by their owners. I want to launch a site with many links pre-populated and then allow the owner of the site I have listed to "claim" their link.

Is this possible or would it be difficult to custom script it?

What would it look like? How do they go about applying and what's the approval process?

There are a few ways I can envision the process:

1. Email is prepopulated:
When I enter a link, I enter an email address (if I can find it on the site). This triggers an "request for validation" email to the site owner via that email

2. Webmaster Email:
A link owner can "claim the link" by having an email verification send to the webmaster@domain.com where domain.com is the link domain

3. Generic domain email:
Anyone with an email form the link domain can request to be the owner.
E.g. Tom@domain.com could request to be the owner of the link domain.com

4. verification on the site:
similar to google sitemaps, the siteowner could be asked to include a verification code in e.g. the meta tag of the homepage

I like option 3 and 4 since they are somewhat easy to implement for most site owners. Version 3 is a lot less secure, but I feel that it would be sufficient security if the person can change link information, but there is a secondary approval from a moderator.

Should the option be next to every guest-owned link? That seems a bit cluttered. Perhaps just in the member home an option to type a url to claim.

I think that would be on option. But I think I like it better on the suggest link page.

The first screen on submit link could just be the URL field. On submit the program checks if the domain is in the db
>> if yes, the submitter can claim it
>> or, the submitter can submit an additional link (if the first link does not belong to him)
>> if the link is not in the db, the program fetches the title and description (as it is already doing) and allows the submitter to enter/change additional information.

This would be great for me too and I also prefer 3 & 4. I have seen it on another site (can't remember where) and they had a simple line below the link, something like "is this your site?" Or you could put it on the details page

Yeah I would like to have that feature too since I'm planning to add several sites to my directory before it's ready and online so that it's not too empty and when the owner wants like voting and rating codes for his site it would be good if he could get it by claiming ownership.
I know that elitefanpages.com (now link-lounge.com) had that feature. I can't remember how it looked like... maybe it was a link on the details page like "your site?" and then by clicking on that link you could request ownership change. The feature is not implemented in l-l.com anymore.

My site is a local business directory, and this would be very helpful for mine as well.

For the time being, I just ask people to register an account, then e-mail me the link info so I can manually go in and change the {LINKOWNERID}.

For my site, unsponsored links cannot add a URL, so I guess the best option for validating my links would be #4.

Paul -

I don't want this thread to die. What do you think are the chances to have this feature added. Would it be faster if I'd pay for it as a custom job?

Thanks

Done for 4.0.0, though you may not like how it's handled in the member home.

Should be out this week I hope.

I went with option 4, but it requires the member to type in the URL of the link, and I forsee issues with links to redirects and the like becoming a headache.
