Thanks mrowton - I have the settings in English format but it is a new field I want to sort.
Thanks Jenny - I actually have folders and files on my computer named in that manner so they sort but never thought to use it here! I hoped perhaps we could have a date format in the add fields

I want a new field that will be a date. I need the input to be in English style (day/month/yr) and then to be able to sort into that date order.
As there is no date format and it will just be text, is this possible?

Under Setttings>General there is a date format area
I *think you can change it to %D to get what you are wanting, then you could use the default sort links option of date added and edited.
If you really want to make a new text field to enter a date then I don't think it would sort properly as the year would be at the end of the string.

I have a directory where I am sorting my links by a specific date. To make it work properly I have the date in this format: yyyy-mm-dd
works fine.
