Hmm. Well I tried it also with no problem, now. Some has changed though since the original post here probably. I have since turned off category tree and category names and link names in URL and possibly some other items have changed. I don't know the exact text and picture file names anymore either, in case that would have had anything to do with it.
It was consistent for me at the time, although that doesn't mean anything now..
Oh well, I'll try and narrow it down if I run across this again.

In the link edit description box:
#1:
or
#2:
work fine.
However:
#3:
for me, produces a link description (post edit) of:
..or some variation of the closing 'image' -- i mage, imag e, etc
Seems to be the "." is throwing off the parsing or something since removal of the .com allows example #3 to work.
PS: how best to quote WSN codes? I changed the "[" amd "]" to "|" since they were being interpreted inside 'code' and 'quote' blocks.

Sounds like a wordwrap problem. It works fine with the normal wordwrap value, what value do you have?
PS: how best to quote WSN codes?
They shouldn't be interpreted inside a code tag, but apparently [image] isn't obeying that rule as it's a bit of a special case.
Should be fixed now. Testing...

That's my setting too, but I'm not able to reproduce your results.
