I was changing the names of several categories that were at level 3 and that worked ok.
Wnen I changed one at level 4, it became a top level category. I was able to move it back to level 3, but it can't get it back down to level 4 where it used to be. The drop down for Parent only shows first and second levels.
Your number of levels for your sitemap you've selected in your settings is less than the number of levels you have. Either turn off the category selector and use id numbers, or increase the levels.
When you edited the link to change the name the category selector couldn't display the category that it was actually located in, so it defaulted to top-level.
If you happen to have been looking at the category selector before you hit edit you would have noticed that the parent was "top level".

Yes I did. and right after, as a test, I created another 4th level category and then renamed it and it moved up to be a top level one.

Ok, that seems to solve it.
I changed Category Selector: from 2 to 3, and that lets me reposition the category to the correct place.
Site Map is set to 6 and unchanged
But I still don't know why changing the name moved the ctagory to the top level in the first place.
