Other than toplists I don't see much you can eliminate there. The category query implies you have a lot of categories, so it might be a little faster if you switched off the selector on submission and subcats on main page... but I don't think that's really necessary.
2 seconds may not be ideal, but it shouldn't be much of a problem. This thread, for example, generated in 2.43 seconds (and this site is on a shared host, spenix). Just keep spiders from abusing it.
Ok, now I'm worried; all my WSN links sites are on HostGator too. My database isn't quite that big yet, but I guess I'd better be careful... or switch before it happens to me.

Added: Paul how do you check your page queries time with debug mode? Is it complicated to do so?
Go to settings->system config and select that debug mode.
