I've been trying out the basic edition for a few days and have not been able to figure a few things out. Some I will figure out later, but my main issue currently is with templating. After searching and trying various methods, I'm more unclear.
I would like to use my own page layout (simple 2 columns, perhaps 3, an image header, text footer) with Links. If at all possible, I'd like to stick with this layout on every page and simply call the variables and sections I want within the layout. Top list over here, categories over there, leaving the finer details to the script core.
The majority of my customizations really need to be in the wrapper if I continue to use it, with other basic generated content in the body. I've not been able to call certain things from the wrapper though - I can list the categories but cannot add their descriptions as a link title, for instance. Moving the category list to the main.tpl template works fine of course. Moving items like this to main.tpl would mean having to also move it to every other template (?).
The long and short of it is that I'd like to keep things simple - use my own layout and call parts where I need them within my layout. Is there a possible solution before I proceed further?

If you can explain the reason for this, it might help answer the question.
You probably already know that the wrapper is mainly for providing a common page layout, like colors, logos at the top, navigation bars on the left and/or right, and common footer info.
Are you wanting a common navigation bar that contains the dynamic categories?

For a visual, my test area is at http://www.syndicolor.com/directory/index.php (view in Firefox! I'll be concerned with IE later). I'd like to keep the main categories in the left column but link titles (<a title="...) are not working if this is placed in the wrapper. I'd also like to show the number of links next to each cat as well as add a top list. I'd like for the middle column to be only the latest added links (with an icon, description, hits for each - will figure out the icon part later ). I will be removing the right column altogether.
Click on any category and you'll see a plain displaylinks.tpl output - nothing more there than one division enclosing the output.
For each page, if I could just call "thisheader" and "thispart" I think I'd understand better and be able to move on to the actual script details

It makes tons of sense while attempting a compliant and accessible layout for any website, also to keep things simple for visitors. To keep it simple, category link: a href="categorylink" title="categorydescription".

This doesn't make any sense, as category descriptions have nothing to do with link titles.
Anyhow, if you want a list of categories outside of the main category list page, make a toplist for it. Toplists do work in the wrapper.
